WEEKEND EDUCATIONAL COURSE
Imaging Strategies
ORGANIZERS: David O. Brunner, Ph.D., Craig H. Meyer, Ph.D. & John P. Mugler, III, Ph.D.

SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate
Sunday, 6 May 2012

OVERVIEW
This one-day course will cover methods important for people who want to design or understand imaging pulse sequences and reconstruction methods. It is meant to be a complementary course to "MR Physics for Physicists”, which will be held the previous day.
Four general topics will be covered:
General Pulse-Sequence Strategies;
RF Pulses and Motion;
Tools for Rapid Imaging; and
Imaging Beyond Morphology.
Each general topic will be organized as set of three 25-minute lectures, each with 5-minute discussion periods.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this course participants should be able to:
Provide examples of different data collection strategies, and their uses;
Design pulse sequences for a given application, to achieve the desired contrast;
Describe approaches to address patient and physiologic motion;
Explain some of the different methods of acceleration, their advantages and disadvantages;
Identify the basic differences between conventional and more recent methods of image reconstruction (e.g. constrained reconstruction methods); and
Explain how different acquisition and reconstruction methods can be used to acquire quantitative parametric images in addition to morphology.

AUDIENCE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed primarily for engineers, scientists, and clinicians who have an interest in understanding, implementing and refining data collection and reconstruction methods in MRI. Participants should have a basic understanding of the general MR data collection and reconstruction framework (e.g. T1 and T2 weighting, RF excitation, k-space and Fourier transforms). Participants will come from both academic and industrial settings, as well as governmental and non-governmental research organizations.
