WEEKEND EDUCATIONAL COURSE
Molecular & Cellular Imaging: From the Bench to the Bed
ORGANIZERS: Jeff W. M. Bulte, Ph.D. & Paula J. Foster, Ph.D.

SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate
Saturday, 5 May 2012

OVERVIEW
This one-day course will begin with a description of how contrast agents can be used to endow cells with MR-visible properties, and how this enables tracking of stem cells and immune cells in various disease models. Different molecular probes will be described, of which some can provide contrast with other modalities. Some focus will be on combining these probes with therapeutic drugs in targeting of surface receptors. We will cover issues in translating molecular imaging from small rodents to large animal models. Finally, the regulatory issues and current pitfalls that exist with clinical translation will be outlined in detail.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this course participants should be able to:
Describe the historical milestones that have led to the current status of the field;
Compare the advantages and disadvantages for each class of MR contrast agents;
Describe the pharmacokinetic profiles of targeted contrast agents;
Recognize toxicity profiles and how to circumvent these;
Explain how nanoparticles can be engineered in different ways;
Describe the basic physical principles of different forms of magnetism; and
List factors that are important for the safety and clinical approval of molecular imaging.

AUDIENCE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed for graduate students, postdoctoral scientists and physicians (radiologists) who are either new to this field or wish to be updated on the current state of the art in molecular and cellular imaging applications.
