Since the SMRT Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, the Education Committee has been reviewing and refining its processes in preparation for what we hope will be a record-breaking number of abstract submissions for the upcoming 2014 meeting in the Italian city of Milan. The deadlines for both the John A Koveleski (JAK) Award and the mainstream award submissions have been aligned and this date is 18 December 2013. The ‘Call for Papers’ is now open on the website, so log on and familiarise yourselves with the requirements. There are detailed instructions for all submitters on “How to write an abstract/Traditional Poster/Oral Presentation” available under the SMRT Mentorship Program tab on the right side of the Home page. We have had an exciting development recently with regards to the Award prize pool available for winning abstracts at the 2014 Annual Meeting. This has been made possible by the generous support and sponsorship of the ISMRM through their Research and Education Fund. This year for the first time, the ISMRM is contributing to our prize pool for those successful abstract submitters who go on to receive one of the fourteen awards offered in the four defined categories; Clinical Focus – Oral and Poster, Research Focus – Oral and Poster, along with the JAK Professional Development Award and the prestigious President’s Award for the best overall abstract submission. This means that in 2014, the President’s Award winner will receive the substantial sum of $800, the JAK Award winner $600 and all other prize categories will be doubled for this year only. If you have been thinking about submitting your work in the past, then this is certainly the year for action! The Education Committee would like to encourage all members and their colleagues to participate in this educational forum, as sharing your work can be both a teaching and learning experience for all of us. Presenting your work in poster format is a good way to become involved if you are anxious about making an oral presentation. I personally know of two colleagues who presented their work as posters for the first time at the Salt Lake City meeting in May and were very pleasantly surprised by the breadth of interest shown by the meeting attendees. For anyone who wants to participate but is unsure of how to proceed, mentor assistance is available. Just visit the website, click on the ‘SMRT Mentorship Program’ and submit a ‘Mentee Application’. You will be contacted by an experienced SMRT colleague who will help to guide you through the writing and submission process. Who knows? It may be your photograph appearing in the list of award recipients in the 2014 post-annual meeting edition of E-Signals! |
